Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Ajax?

- Town of Ajax Tree Protection By-law 137-2006. It requires a permit to injure or destroy a living tree on certain designated land: areas designated Environmental Protection, Open Space or a park in the Town’s Official Plan, and land zoned Private Open Space.
- Typical home lots are exempt. The by-law does not apply to a tree on a lot smaller than 1.2 hectares that has a single dwelling on it, unless the land is zoned Private Open Space. It also exempts removal of a diseased, dead or hazardous tree.
- Durham Region woodlands. The Region’s Woodland By-law covers trees in woodlands of one hectare or larger. Areas under one hectare are the responsibility of the local municipality. Dead or hazardous tree removal is among the listed exemptions.
If your property backs onto a park or wooded area, or you are unsure how it is designated or zoned, contact the Town of Ajax before booking. We can provide an arborist assessment of the tree’s condition, but the application and decision belong to the Town.
Town and Boulevard Trees in Ajax
